GLB and USDZ are the two formats that matter for selling products in 3D. Mixing them up is the most common rookie mistake I see, and it is also the most avoidable.
The short version, which nobody gives you. GLB is the web-friendly one. It powers the 3D viewer right on your product page and works across browsers. USDZ is Apple's format. It is what makes "view in your room" AR work on iPhones. You want both, and you want them for different reasons: GLB for the page, USDZ for the AR button.
Where sellers actually get stuck: their shiny new model arrives as OBJ or FBX, which is wonderful for Blender and completely useless on a Shopify product page. Or they get a GLB with no USDZ and cannot figure out why AR refuses to work on iPhones. The converter step is unglamorous. It is also non-negotiable.
A good Shopify 3D model app can save you real time here. The better viewer and AR apps handle the format juggling quietly in the background, so you are not converting files by hand for every SKU. When you are evaluating one, ignore the feature list for a minute and check two things: which formats it accepts on the way in, which it delivers on the way out. An app that takes your GLB and silently produces the USDZ you need is worth more than a prettier app that leaves you doing it yourself.
Then the AR angle. An AR preview app for ecommerce lives or dies on format support, because Apple wants USDZ and Android wants GLB, and an app that covers only one side leaves half your shoppers staring at a broken button. Half your traffic is not a rounding error.
Most photo-to-3D tools now export GLB natively, and a solid chunk handle USDZ too. But "export" sometimes means a janky auto-conversion that bloats the file or shreds the textures. File size is its own problem. A 50MB model makes your product page feel like dial-up, and shoppers do not wait for dial-up anymore. Sometimes the smarter play is to generate in whatever format the tool does best, then convert with a dedicated converter. One extra step, but it beats being trapped inside one tool's mediocre exporter.
Photo3DTools compares 59 generators by output format, including which ones give you clean GLB and USDZ without a separate converter step.
And if format headaches are not your idea of fun, I generate 3D models per product for Shopify and Etsy sellers, delivered in the formats your store needs, at photo3dtools.com.
